A compendium of digital initiatives by Tribune Company ex pats

TRIBUNE HISTORY
  • 1983 started in pre-press nights, strictly manual cut and paste. In between deadlines, started finding different ways to make the dept more efficient. No one asked. I just "did". After about 6 mos, I was promoted to lead person, then asst. supervisor/lead operator. As the Courant gradually morphed into a more electronic production, I am very good at figuring things out. I watched editors as they used ATEX on the Production floor. Before long I offered editors "clues" on how to fix a story's coding problem. I took advantage of the tools primarily relegated to news/editorial staff and developed templates and standards that assisted manual and electronic pasteup, saving materials and time, and promoted consistency of product. At one point I got to play "layout editor" in Special Sections, laying out special sections and seasonal tabs. I hadn't used a Mac before, but figured it out just fine ... just like I figured out "html". Eventually manual pasteup became a thing of the past and I merged into an Electronic Paginator. Like with ATEX before, soon was "helping" editors resolve issues. After my 19+ years, through many phases of The Courant and the early rounds of layoffs/early retirement offers, the Pagination dept, and my position, became a thing of the past and I was laid off. Maybe I trained the editors too well... ;-)
